  5.     Since taking office last month as France's first female Prime
  6. Minister, Edith Cresson has managed to incite fury abroad with
  7. her biting bouche. Shortly after her appointment, she declared
  8. on television that Japan was an "aggressor" that "lived in a
  9. universe different from ours, a universe of domination." The
  10. remarks prompted the Japanese Foreign Ministry to lodge a
  11. complaint with the French ambassador, and sparked protests
  12. outside the French embassy in Tokyo.

  14.     Last week Cresson drew fire again, this time for saying
  15. that Frenchmen are more interested in women than are men in the
  16. U.S., Germany and Britain -- where, she contended, a quarter of
  17. the males are homosexual. When these allegations, made in a
  18. 1987 interview for a book about women, were published in
  19. Britain's Sunday Observer, Cresson, 57, claimed that it was "not
  20. fair play" to pull an old conversation "out of a drawer."
  21. Throughout England, stiff upper lips quivered. "They don't call
  22. Paris `Gay Paree' for nothing, you know," retorted the tabloid
  23. Sun.
